I just finished a leadership seminar with a talented
group of VICA students. These are officers of Vocational Industrial
Clubs of America from all over the state of Kentucky.
Communication was one of the key leadership skills we discussed and
listening is one of the most important elements of communication.
Here are ten tips for becoming a better listener.
- Judge CONTENT not delivery.
- Delay EVALUATION.
- Listen for IDEAS.
- Resist DISTRACTIONS.
- PASS it on. (Listen as though you are going to share the
information with someone else at a later time.)
- Be PRESENT.
- Expect the BEST.
- Make the SPEAKER important.
- Ask QUESTION/ PARAPHRASE.
- Talk LESS.
When we become better listeners we become better communicators.
It's one of the most important qualities for a leader to possess.
